Ep. 8 – What Is The Mission of Campus Ministry? (Ben Rae)

Faith On Campus Podcast Episode by Ben Smart, On The Mission Of Campus Ministry, with Ben Rae

In this episode I speak with Ben Rae about the mission and goal of campus ministry. Ben is the Staff Team Leader at the University of Western Australia in Perth. With a team of almost 20 people (6 students and 13 staff), a big part of his role is to make sure they are clear on their mission and all pulling in the same direction. So what is their goal? What is the mission of campus ministry, and what is it actually trying to achieve?

At one level, all gospel ministries (whether church or parachurch) will have a very similar mission. It will be some variation of the Great Commission, Jesus’ call for us to go and make disciples of all nations. But while university campus ministry shares that same mission with the local church, there are some pretty critical differences in strategy – how we seek to go about fulfilling that mission.

Ben Rae shares with us some of the big differences he’s seen, and some of the reasons that campus ministry has unique & distinctive strategic opportunities for carrying out the Great Commission.

This is probably my favourite quote from the interview:
“Students have got this amazing opportunity while they’re on campus – whatever it is, 3, 4, 5, 6 years – to spend heaps of time digging into the Bible, huge evangelistic opportunities… It’s a real hot-house kind of environment, where you can really turbocharge their growth. And for those who get it and buy into it, I think it sets them up for the rest of their life to be really effective servants of Jesus wherever they are.”
